The problem is no longer theoretical.
Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that a Motor Vehicle Commission breakdown registered about 6,600 noncitizens to vote in 2023–2024. About 400 of those people cast ballots. They had answered that they were not U.S. citizens. The system registered them anyway.
How New Jersey’s system works today
You must say you are a citizen to register. You generally do not have to prove it.
New Jersey does not require photo ID for most voters at the polls.
Under motor-voter / automatic registration, a trip to MVC for a license or ID can also put someone on the voter rolls. Noncitizens can legally obtain New Jersey driver’s licenses. A license is not proof of voting eligibility.
What we are asking the Legislature and Governor Sherrill to pass
Documentary proof of U.S. citizenship before a new registration is added to the rolls.
Residency verification tied to a New Jersey address, not just an honor-system form.
Photo voter ID at the polls for every voter.
An automatic block so anyone who answers “not a citizen” at MVC can never be transmitted to the voter file.
Regular list maintenance and public reporting when ineligible registrations are found.
Call to action
Tell your senator and assembly member: No proof, no registration. No ID, no ballot.
About 6,600 registered, and Governor Sherrill claims fewer than 400 voted.
The point is not that one race was “stolen.” The point is the system allowed ineligible people onto the rolls, and some of them voted.
Citizenship is already the law. Verification is what was missing.
Voter ID protects legal voters. It does not suppress citizens who already use ID to drive, fly, bank, and pick up a package.
Residency verification stops the “form only” loophole.
This is about equal protection of every lawful ballot, not party.

Early Voting Period
Every county will provide registered voters with this option for the 2026 General Election. They will designate in-person early voting locations that will be open October 24, 2026 – November 1, 2026 (the in-person early voting period). Hours will be Monday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. and Sunday, 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. No appointment is necessary.
