On Tuesday night, July 14, the Kinnelon Board of Education took a stand for families.

After hearing public comment, the Board passed its Parental Rights Policy. This is a meaningful step toward ensuring that parents—not school staff or outside activists—remain the primary decision-makers in their children’s education and upbringing.

Gregory Quinlan, founder of the Center for Garden State Families, spoke clearly and firmly in support of parental rights. The New Jersey Project stood with him. His message was straightforward: parents do not co-parent with the government. Children are not wards of the state.

Unfortunately, the meeting was not free of hostility. Members of the audience, many of whom identify as LGB and trans, directed sharp opposition toward those defending the policy. Despite that pressure, the Board did the right thing and voted to protect the rights of parents.

We commend the Kinnelon Board of Education for listening to concerned families and for refusing to surrender parental authority. Transparency, notification, and the right of parents to guide their own children are not extreme demands—they are fundamental.

This is how local accountability works. When parents show up, speak up, and stay engaged, boards can still choose to put families first.
