Born Alive But Allowed to Die

When it comes to life and family in the United States of America we have a world view problem.

For the last several decades Western culture has adopted an moral relativistic ethic that life is expendable when and if it’s in the best interest of society.

ACTION STEP

We proudly support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. We urge you to contact your legislators and ask them to cosponsor A152 and S462.

Please ALSO thank and encourage the sponsors, Assembly members Parker Space, Hal Wirths & Betty Lou DeCroce, and Senate sponsors Michael Doherty, Steven Oroho & Joseph Pennacchio.

  • Princeton Prof. Peter Singer’s comments that a parent should be able to kill her child up to three years of age and calling disabled and elderly persons useless eaters.

  • Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s detailed description on how to deal with killing a child in the third trimester

  • Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s January 22, 2019 signing of New York’s overreaching third trimester abortion law, which was celebrated with the lighting of the One World Trade Center pinnacle in pink.

Clearly, we have developed a worldview that life is expendable when it’s convenient.

Perhaps, with the help of your emails and phone calls to legislators, we can change things here in New Jersey.

New Jersey has introduced “The Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act” (A152/S462). The bill is spearheaded by our friends at New Jersey Right to Life. The Center for Garden State Families wholeheartedly supports this legislation. It’s number two on our “Five Areas of Focus.”

A 152 is sponsored by Assemblymen Parker Space, Hal Wirths & Assemblywoman Betty Lou DeCroce along with 13 other Assembly Persons. The parallel Senate bill S462 is sponsored by State Senators Michael Doherty, Steven Oroho and Joseph Pennacchio.

Under the bill, if an abortion or attempted abortion results in a child born alive, any health care professional present at the time the child is born alive is to exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious health care professional would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age, and ensure that the child is immediately transported and admitted to a hospital for treatment. A person who violates the above provisions is to be guilty of a crime of the third degree. A crime of the third degree is punishable by three to five years imprisonment, a fine of up to $15,000, or both.

Let's put a face on this subject

April 7, 1999 in a northern Cincinnati suburban hospital Bethesda North, a 19-year-old mother presented in the emergency room in labor. Two days prior she had visited Dr. Martin Haskell and abortionist who had developed a partial birth abortion procedure using laminaria (a form of seaweed). The laminaria is used to dilate the cervix making it easier to access the unborn infant so that you can turn the baby allowing the child to be born breech. This gave Dr. Haskell access to the child’s cranium where a sharp instrument was to be plunged into the base of the babies exposed head so the brain tissue could be suctioned out. The procedure takes about 2 to 3 days.

While waiting in the emergency room she gave birth to the 22 week gestation infant. The little girl she gave birth to was breathing on her own clinging to life. Emergency rooms are not birthing centers. The ER doctor called neonatal intensive care and a discussion ensued. When it was decided that this little premature baby was a product of abortion the hospital decided to take no measures to save her life. The baby was given the name Baby Hope. The nurses in the ER cleaned her up and one of the nurses wrapped her little body in a blanket and rocked her until she died. A baby at 22 weeks gestation cannot maintain core body temperature. Baby Hope was breathing on her own moving her arms a little baby that could have lived if she had just been put in an incubator and giving nutrition and fluids. Little Baby Hope had no value because she was a “product” of abortion.

Fast-forward August 4, 1999, 60 miles north at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Same abortionist Dr. Martin Haskell, same partial birth abortion procedure. A mother presents herself in the emergency room, in labor and gives birth to a little baby girl. This little girl born at one and 1/2 pounds, breathing on her own, 26 weeks gestation, still struggling to maintain core body temperature. There was no discussion about the value of her life or whether or not she was a “product” of abortion. This Christian based Catholic hospital immediately took measures to save her little life. The birth mother still wanted nothing to do with her. Good Samaritan Hospital named this tiny infant, Baby Grace. Baby Grace survived, thrived and was placed for adoption from the hospital. She was adopted by a family, we don’t know the name her adopted parents gave her but we do know that has of this writing she would be looking forward to her 21st birthday.

Two worldviews about the value of human life. Baby Hope was sacrificed on the altar of political expediency and convenience. A human being born alive but not allowed to live. Baby Grace was blessed to be born in a medical facility that valued her personhood, that valued her life. Baby Grace was recognized as a human being and was given a chance at life!

We at The Center for Garden State Families value human life. We recognize that life is a gift from God, our Creator, the one who, knit us together in our mother’s womb. The one who, before the foundation of the world, had a plan for our lives, a plan to prosper us not to harm us, a plan to give us a future and a hope.
